Why it matters
Supply chain stopped being a cost topic and became a continuity topic. After the last few years, the question in committees is no longer how much I save by buying there, but what I do if tomorrow I cannot buy there at all.
My reading goes through visibility upstream. Almost every company knows who its supplier is; very few know who their supplier's supplier is. And it is there, at the second tier, that the surprises which stop a production line usually live.
What usually goes wrong
What I see fail most is the alternative plan that exists only on paper. A second supplier is identified, nothing was ever bought from them, and the day you need them it turns out they have no capacity, no certification, or need six months to start. An alternative never exercised is not an alternative.
What to watch
- How many days of operation inventory covers if that dependency is cut.
- Whether there is visibility beyond the direct supplier, which is where the surprises are.
- Which decisions can be made with the information available and who has authority to make them.
How I read this entry
What I would do is translate this into days of operation. Not into percentages or dollars first, but into how many days the business can keep shipping if this piece fails. Everyone at the table understands that number, and it orders priorities without argument.
