Why it matters

A beautiful dashboard can hide a bad number for months. That is why I distrust stories about visualisation that say nothing about governance: the expensive part is not displaying the number, it is guaranteeing the number means the same thing on Tuesday as on Thursday.

My criterion is that data only helps if it arrives in time for the decision it is meant to support. A perfect report that lands on the eighth for a decision taken on the third is a useless report, however correct it is. Timeliness beats precision more often than people admit.

What usually goes wrong

The frequent mistake is starting with the tool instead of the question. The platform gets bought, everything gets connected, and only then does somebody sit down to think about what they wanted to know. It almost always turns out the important question needed data nobody was capturing.

What to watch

  • When the number arrives relative to when the decision is taken, which is what defines its usefulness.
  • Who answers for the quality of the indicator when somebody challenges it in a committee.
  • Which concrete decision changes because of this and who makes it: without that, it is one more dashboard.

How I read this entry

What I would ask for is a business owner for each critical indicator, by name. Not an area: a person. Data without an owner degrades on its own, and when somebody asks why the number changed, there is nobody to ask.
