Why it matters
In logistics, technology pays off when it reduces uncertainty, not when it reduces paperwork. Knowing where the cargo is helps little if nothing different can be done anyway; what matters is knowing early enough to change the decision.
I separate the information problem from the decision problem. Often the data was available and nobody had authority to act without escalating three levels. Putting a system on top of that only makes the delay better documented.
What usually goes wrong
What I see fail most is the alternative plan that exists only on paper. A second supplier is identified, nothing was ever bought from them, and the day you need them it turns out they have no capacity, no certification, or need six months to start. An alternative never exercised is not an alternative.
What to watch
- Where the concentration sits: one supplier, one route or one port with no replacement.
- How many days of operation inventory covers if that dependency is cut.
- Whether there is visibility beyond the direct supplier, which is where the surprises are.
How I read this entry
If this touched an operation I know, the first thing I would build is the map of critical dependencies: which inputs have no second source and how long inventory lasts if supply is cut. It is a two-week exercise and it completely changes the risk conversation with the board.
